Power Africa in Burkina Faso

 

Burkina Faso Electricity Profile: 200mw currently installed, 17% access, 1% rural access

SONABEL, Burkina Faso’s national electricity company, uses thermal (heavy fuel oil) and hydropower to cover an estimated 60% of the country’s current electricity capacity. The rest is imported from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, as part of the West African Power Pool (WAPP). Over the past decade, electricity demand has increased by about 13%, while supply has increased by just 8%. The annual consumption of electricity per capita is among the lowest in Africa, and is estimated at 35kWh. Based on 2013 data, Burkina Faso’s national electrification rate reached 17%, (1% in rural areas, 56% in urban areas).
