August 14th, 2014, was the launch of SERFOR, the National Forest and Wildlife Service. This organization leads a sustainable, inclusive and competitive forest and wildlife management that allows Peru to be a leader coping with the challenges generated by climate change and the pressure currently exerted on forests.
“The goal is that the forest sector generates 3,000 million dollars annually in income by the activity from concessions and forestry plantations” said the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Mr. Juan Manuel Benites.
On July 10, 2014, acting USAID Mission Director Ted Gehr along with the local authorities in Bagua Grande, inaugurated the 4th edition of Expo Amazonica -- a fair showcasing the rich variety of products from the Amazon. Expo Amazonica 2014 featured 140 of the Peruvian agribusiness companies, promoting the commercial and productive exchange of the Amazon regions and its neighboring regions, that undoubtedly, will continue to mobilize the economy and the beautiful region and welfare of its population.
This year the Salon del Cacao & Chocolate was held at Parque de la Reserva in Lima with more than 80 stands dedicated to cocoa and derived products and the presence of more than 30 thousand people. Peru produces 71 thousand 4 hundred metric tonnes of cocoa and exports 45 thousand metric tonnes to Asia, Europe, Oceania and the United States for more than 145 million dollars. Most of the chocolate produced in Peru is of high quality, elaborated with 60 to 70 percent of the best cocoa in the world.
Digital Inclusion, a program of USAID and CEDRO- Information and Education Center for Drug Abuse Prevention- launched its 25th technology center in Huicungo, in the San Martin region in the Amazon.
The ceremony was presided over by Alejandro Vassilaqui CEDRO Executive Director, and Ted Gehr USAID Deputy Director via teleconference from Lima.
This launch took place as part of the activities held to celebrate CEDRO’s 28th anniversary of foundation and the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The Mountain Institute has provided leadership in sustainable mountain development in Peru since the 1990’s. This initiative builds on the USAID supported Peaks to Coast Project and the High Mountain Adaptation Partnership. Through this new project, USAID will provide $3 million dollars to be matched from other sources through 2017. Other donors to The Mountain Institute’s work in the region include the McKnight Foundation, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the National Geographic Society, the US Department of State and the Peruvian Government.
