Mais Unidos Social Investment Report

The report includes information on Mais Unidos - USAID which is made up of approximately one hundred companies that carry out joint social responsibility activities and every year invest in socio-economic and environmental initiatives. The Group has been implementing projects, sharing good practices and establishing partnerships since 2006. The work is important and unique because it seeks to improve companies’ social investments practices for the betterment of all.

The purpose of this document is to provide a brief overview of Mais Unidos achievements, as well as the main characteristics of each company. The following pages outline projects developed in 2012 by the Group in Brazil and the main social and environmental initiatives undertaken in the same period by 37 of its companies.

Brazilian National Parks

USAID is working in partnership with the Government of Brazil to expand the public use and visitation of Brazilian national parks, starting with parks located near the cities that are going to host the World Cup of Soccer in 2014.

From October 30th to November 2nd, Fishing with 3GNets project partners – Qualcomm, USAID Municipality of Cabralia and Telefonica Vivo - had the pleasure of hosting in Brazil, 3 Colombians from which included a coordinator from CINTEL and two fishermen leaders from La Boquilla. The purpose of the trip was for the Colombians to learn best practices from the Brazilians participating in the Fishing with 3G project.

USAID/Brazil and Yunus Social Business met to discuss ideas and possibilities to work as partners. The objective of the meeting was to identify specific activities that will promote the concept of social business in Brazil. The meeting took place as a result of a Global MOU previously signed by USAID Administrator and Prof. Yunus earlier this year in Washington-DC. Brazil is considered a good place to implement the concept of social business. The country’s socioeconomic and development policies have produced successful results during the last fifteen years.

USAID and the U.S companies in Brazil (Mais Unidos Group) developed a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MSTI) of Brazil.

On November 13th, USAID and Mais Unidos Group will launch its 3rd Social Investment Report. The event will be held at the AMCHAM in Sao Paulo and 36 companies participated in the report.

The Fishing with 3G Nets project has the objective of creating conditions for sustainable development of local fishing communities, based on actions for social strengthening, environmental management and economic development, integrating knowledge and existing traditional practices with current technological alternatives and possibilities, with the 3G technology as the main pillar behind planned activities.
