In partnership with the United States Agency for International Development, Adal Azyk, one of the largest meat processing companies in the country, opened a new slaughterhouse in Kochkor district of Naryn. The facility is one of only two in Kyrgyzstan that are compliant with international food safety standards, and which hold the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification that international buyers require.
On Saturday, September 9, Alan Meltzer, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, with Damir Monoldorov, First Deputy of the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in Issyk-Kul Oblast, and Daniyar Arpachiev, Mayor of Karakol, announced the opening of the new River Park in Karakol city. The park will provide space for community events, and serve as a new venue for recreation and relaxation by the city’s many tourists and residents alike. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) renovated the riverfront area as a part of its broader efforts to promote job creation and higher incomes through increased international tourism in Karakol and throughout Kyrgyzstan.
Osh – The U.S. Government through USAID’s Business Growth Initiative partnered with a local Kyrgyzstani apparel firm to open a new service center in Osh that will provide printing and cutting services for sewing shops in Osh city and the entire south. The service center will save local garment producers significant amounts of money and time.
On June 14, U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Sheila Gwaltney attended the opening ceremony of a vegetable consolidation center in Aravan that will directly benefit thousands of farmers in the south of the country. This Aravan-based facility is a result of a partnership between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the private entrepreneur Mr. Avaz Abdurahimov. The consolidation center is one of the largest in the south and can sort, clean, and package around 24,000 tons of vegetables per year.
The U.S. Government, through USAID, partnered with the Kyrgyz Mountain Guides Association to train 75 trekking guides from May 10 through 24. Trekking guides from across the country were trained on customer care, international safety, and geographical orientation. The five-day training included a mix of classroom studies and a two-day mountain trek at an altitude of 2,300 meters in the Jyrgalan Valley. This was the first large-scale trekking guide training in Kyrgyzstan—an event which the Kyrgyz Mountain Guides Association intends to continue in the future.
On April 21, during the World Book Day celebration at Kurmanjan Datka Square in Bishkek, U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Sheila Gwaltney announced a donation of over 130,000 books to 80 children’s libraries across the country. The United States will contribute the books through its USAID Reading Together project, which improves the reading skills of early grade students.
A new mobile application, OshCity, allows Osh residents to send appeals, complaints and recommendations directly to the Mayor’s Office or 25 municipal services, which will greatly simplify communication between citizens and the Mayor’s Office. In addition, the app enables citizens to upload photos, track other messages and read the news of the Mayor's Office.
On April 10, 2017, the U.S. Government through USAID launched two information terminals at Manas International Airport to prevent human trafficking and protect the rights of Kyrgyzstani migrants traveling abroad.
From March 8-12, the U.S. Government through USAID partnered with Kyrgyzstani tour operators to represent the Kyrgyz Republic at ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel and tourism exhibition held annually in the German capital. A fully operational traditional Kyrgyz yurt drew in more than 10,000 visitors eager to glimpse authentic nomad culture and sample traditional food, drink, and music. After the event Ms. Rahat Jamalova, head of tourism promotion NGO “Destination Karakol,” remarked “Ten thousand visitors far exceeds the number of visits in 2016, and we look forward to seeing how that translates to real visitors to the country in the 2017-18 season.”
