On September 29, 2017, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will organize a forum to discuss capacity development and enhancement of service delivery for local government bodies in the Kyrgyz Republic. Over 120 representatives of municipalities, local councils and civil society organizations from Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul, Osh, and Naryn provinces, national government, and international organizations will come together to share best practices and lessons learned.

The event will include presentations on innovative tools and strategies to improve local service delivery and ensure sustainability. Municipalities from Jalal-Abad and Issyk-Kul provinces will share their experiences and best practices in improving garbage collection services, establishing public-private partnerships to provide State subsidized arts and culture programming, and privatizing agricultural services.

Today, March 24, the U.S. Government commemorates World TB Day by reaffirming its commitment to eradicating tuberculosis (TB) with the Kyrgyz Republic. Through the USAID Defeat TB project, the U.S. is investing over $12 million over five years in the health and future of the Kyrgyzstani people.

From January 26-29, seven tour operators from the Kyrgyz Republic participated in the Eastern Mediterranean Travel and Tourism (EMITT) fair in Istanbul, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In partnership with the Turkish travel and media firm, Gezimanya, USAID also hosted several promotional events at the exhibition to generate additional interest in Kyrgyzstan among foreign tour operators, tourism social media bloggers and traditional media outlets. As a result, Kyrgyzstani tour operators negotiated 42 potential contracts for the 2017 summer season.

From January 18-22, USAID supported the Kyrgyz Tourism Department’s participation in the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) Madrid exhibition. FITUR is a leading European tourism fair and a total 9,500 tourism companies from 165 countries participated in this year’s event.

According to an assessment of the USAID Reading Together project presented on Tuesday, January 17, primary grade students who participate in the project demonstrate significantly improved reading skills. Teachers trained through USAID Reading Together have also increased their use of effective teaching methods, and more parents are reading with their children as result of the project.

24 teachers from two primary schools for blind and visually impaired children in Bishkek and Osh received training on innovative methods for teaching reading and writing to children. The teachers gained new skills and practice on using teaching technologies like specialized software and smartphones alongside traditional Braille methods (reading and writing by touch) when working with blind and low vision children.

On December 12, National Literature Day, U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Sheila Gwaltney announced USAID's donation of over 264,000 books that will be distributed among all Kyrgyz-language public primary schools. Each Kyrgyz-language public primary school will receive a set of 123 Kyrgyz language books featuring tales, stories, riddles, and poetry tailored to the needs of early readers.

On December 8, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Alan Meltzer presented a copy of pedestrian street map signs that were installed in Karakol to the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government in Issyk-Kul oblast, Askhat Akibaev, and to Mayor of Karakol Daniyar Arpachiev. The U.S. Government, through USAID, installed 46 tourist signs across Issyk-Kul oblast, including four pedestrian maps in cities to make the world-class tourist attractions of the oblast more accessible to visitors.

On November 22, the USAID Agro Horizon project and Oasis Agro, LLC, signed a memorandum of understanding to boost diary production in Osh and Jalal-Abad. This partnership will leverage private sector investment and expertise to increase the efficiency and quality of milk production, which will improve competitiveness of Kyrgyz farmers.
