Micronutrient deficiencies are responsible for widespread health and economic consequences, including maternal mortality, child mortality, stunting, blindness, chronic anemia and reduced capacity to work. West Africa is challenged with pervasive, severe and chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with UNAIDS and the Global Fund, is supporting the second West and Central Africa Key Populations (KP) workshop on the theme “Enhancing KP Interventions: Taking Stock and Moving Forward”. This 3-day workshop is organized by the USAID Regional HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Project PACTE-VIH and hosted by the Government of Togo (Ministry of Health).

This is the report from a meeting for regional consultations on key populations and HIV/AIDS that was held at the King Fahd Palace Hotel in Dakar, Senegal, on April 10, 2015.  The purpose of the meeting was to revamp efforts geared towards containing the HIV epidemic based on new scientific evidence; share the outcomes of various studies on the new trends of HIV spread among key populations; and agree on actions to reduce barriers that prevent key populations from gaining access to public health services.

 On May 11 in Ouagadougou, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), launched a five-year project:  Mitigating Electoral Violence through National Early Warning Systems (NEWS).  As part of the U.S. Government’s efforts to support the 2015 elections in Burkina Faso, NEWS will collect and analyze information on possible triggers of electoral violence, and develop recommendations for peace building activities to help prevent or contain the outbreak of electoral violence.

Over 150 young leaders from 21 West African countries will gather in Accra, Ghana next week to share their expertise and engage on issues they have defined as critical for the future of Africa.  In support of President Barack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), USAID and IREX are organizing the 1st Annual West Africa Regional Conference for Mandela Washington Fellows in Accra from April 26-28, 2015.
