HANOI, September 28, 2017 -- Today the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched Phase II of the Building Resilience to Natural Hazards in Central Vietnam project.   Phase II will be implemented by the American Red Cross with five Consortium members:  Vietnam Red Cross, Plan International, HelpAge International, Catholic Relief Services, and Save the Children.

With a grant of $1.54 million, Phase II is expected to benefit 37,000 people directly and 200,000 people indirectly in the four target provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Quang Tri by helping them be better prepared for natural disasters.  Phase II will utilize a community-based approach to help communities increase their resilience against disasters.  Consortium Partners will continue to provide support for the improvement of early warning systems, raise disaster preparedness awareness, and conduct trainings on first aid and search and rescue.

U.S. Embassy officials will today visit Dien Bien province to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the United States and Vietnam and hold local consultations to inform about operational planning for HIV/AIDS programming.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen disaster response management. By building capacity at MARD to implement what is called an Incident Command System (ICS), USAID supports Vietnam’s efforts to continuously improve response and coordination systems to more effectively respond to all kinds of incidents and disasters.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today joined the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry to formally establish a new Vietnam Trade Facilitation Alliance (VTFA) through a memorandum of understanding. The private sector-led alliance will provide policy and technical assistance to the General Department of Vietnam Customs and relevant trade facilitation agencies and authorities in Vietnam to advance Vietnam’s competitiveness.

The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Acting Assistant Administrator for Asia, Anne Aarnes, will pay a working visit to Vietnam from December 10-12. During the visit Ms. Aarnes will mark the creation of a USAID-backed alliance that supports trade facilitation to help Vietnam expand the benefits of economic integration.

Yesterday Americans celebrated Thanksgiving by giving thanks. I feel as though the holiday has extended a day, given how much I appreciate the wonderful news this morning that the National Assembly has ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. I am also thankful to the Vietnam Federation of Disabilities for hosting this year’s Asia Pacific Disability Forum to help ensure that those living with disability in this region are heard and supported.

Today 200 businesswomen from across Vietnam gathered in Hanoi to advance their leadership skills for sustainable business growth and to better understand the business environment during Vietnam´s period of international integration and development.
