March 15, 2017 - Today’s event at Hotel Alexander Palace in Skopje marks the achievements and joint efforts in the last five years of the USAID Interethnic Integration in Education Program (IIEP) in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, educational institutions, municipalities, schools and partners. The objective of this program was to integrate children of various ethnic backgrounds through education and other activities. IIEP involved schools, teachers, children and parents, local leaders, and entire communities in developing interethnic relationships and building the foundation for a better future. In his remarks, Mr. James Stein, Mission Director of the USAID Macedonia, noted that “For many years, USAID has worked closely with the Government of Macedonia, municipal leaders, and other partners to improve access to a quality education for all of Macedonia’s learners. We have made great progress in this effort.

USAID Civil Engagement Project

USAID Publishes Manual on Job-Search Strategies in Braille

On May 29, 2014, USAID’s Persons with Disabilities Internship and Employment Project, in cooperation with the Dimitar Vlahov State School for Rehabilitation of Visually Impaired Children and Youth, presented The Manual on Job Search Strategies published in Braille for blind and visually impaired people. The manual, a collaborative effort between the Project and Dimitar Vlahov School, will provide guidance to blind and visually impaired people seeking employment.

On Thursday, May 22, the USAID Roma Education Project (REP), implemented by the Foundation for Open Society-Macedonia, held a close-out ceremony in Skopje.  The 10-year project benefited more than 3,000 Roma students at all levels of education - from pre-school to university -  and significantly improved rates of student enrollment, retention, and graduation.  The event focused on the accomplishments of the project and acknowledged the contributions of partners and stakeholders.  Several speeches and video testimonials spoke of the life-changing impact of the assistance.

On May 16, 2014, the USAID Interethnic Integration in Education Project, together with the municipality of Vinica, celebrated the completion of renovations at the Vanco Prke Secondary School in Vinica. The process of refurbishment, financially supported by the U.S. Government through the United States European Command , created a better educational environment for students and teachers in Vinica, and supports the process of interethnic integration in education.

USAID and Ecolog Launch Support Fund for Women and Youth Entrepreneurs

March 28, 2014 in Tetovo, the USAID Small Business Expansion Project together with Ecolog, an international integrated services company, launched the Support Fund for Women and Youth Entrepreneurs. Each partner has contributed $15,000 to establish the fund, which will help small businesses increase their capacities, create more jobs, and improve livelihoods and lives in the Polog region.

USAID improves Roma lives through education

On 5th February, USAID presented the last External Performance Evaluation Report of its decade-long Roma Education Project (REP), implemented by the Foundation Open Society – Macedonia (FOSM). The evaluation findings highlight the project’s positive impact on the Roma community and confirm shifting attitudes among teachers, Roma students, and their parents. Roma student achievement and teacher training both helped significantly reduce the level of prejudice previously so prevalent in the participating schools.
