Willy Bett, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries
Distinguished guests
Ladies and gentlemen

Good morning!

USAID is honored to join the Cabinet Secretary, representatives of various stakeholders in the agriculture sector, and everyone here for this important event.

This launch of the Hermetic Storage Technology campaign represents one of the most important goals shared by the United States and Kenya: to transform the lives of millions of Kenyans by ensuring that they live in food secure households, eat nutritious foods and have opportunities for sustainable prosperity within their communities.

This supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and is the vision supported by the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future global hunger and food security initiative.

In 2013, the U.S. Government made a five year, $225 million dollar investment in inclusive agriculture-led economic growth, and the expansion of markets and trade in Kenya. We did this because we believe that agriculture is a driver of development.

I’m so happy to be here in Samburu this morning! We are here to participate in the hand-over of the Rapunye community water, sanitation and hygiene — or WASH — facility to help families in Samburu live healthy and resilient lives. This water facility has been supported by USAID to complement the excellent work the Government of Kenya and Samburu County are doing to improve people’s health and prosperity, and is one of the many activities USAID has supported under our APHIAplus IMARISHA project that operates across Kenya’s northern arid lands.

For over a decade USAID has been partnering with the Government of Kenya to invest in the health workforce. Investing in the health workforce is critical because, even if we strengthen all other aspects of the health system, if there aren’t qualified health workers motivated to care for patients and placed where they are needed, Kenya will not meet its health goals.

It is in response to this trans-boundary threat, that USAID is taking decisive action to reduce wildlife crime in the region. USAID is working with national wildlife conservation agencies in expanding existing counter wildlife trafficking interventions using advanced tools like the WILD app for digital monitoring and tracking of wildlife.

The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem has significant socio-economic benefits not only for Kenya and Tanzania, but also for the entire East Africa Region. This basin supports the livelihoods of more than one million people by providing critical biodiversity and ecosystem services such as water supply, agriculture, and livestock and fisheries production. The basin is also home to some of the world’s most iconic and magnificent wildlife in the world, an important part of the economy and tourism industry.

On behalf of the donor community and the USAID mission in Kenya and East Africa, I am delighted to join CIMMYT on this auspicious occasion to mark the 50 years they have devoted to ensuring that smallholder farmers and their families can meet their need for food and nutritional security. This is a daunting but critical task in this part of the world. So first of all, I want to say thank you for your dedicated work.

I am thrilled to have this opportunity to talk to you this morning. The part of my job that I enjoy the most is meeting with young people like you, who early in life have demonstrated strength and perserverance in achieving your goals. I hope my words can inspire you as much as you inspire me.
