Willy Bett, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries
Distinguished guests
Ladies and gentlemen

Good morning!

USAID is honored to join the Cabinet Secretary, representatives of various stakeholders in the agriculture sector, and everyone here for this important event.

This launch of the Hermetic Storage Technology campaign represents one of the most important goals shared by the United States and Kenya: to transform the lives of millions of Kenyans by ensuring that they live in food secure households, eat nutritious foods and have opportunities for sustainable prosperity within their communities.

This supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and is the vision supported by the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future global hunger and food security initiative.

In 2013, the U.S. Government made a five year, $225 million dollar investment in inclusive agriculture-led economic growth, and the expansion of markets and trade in Kenya. We did this because we believe that agriculture is a driver of development.

It gives me great pleasure this afternoon to see all of you together, reflecting on collaborative approaches to building resilience. Indeed, your presence here is a testimony of an inspired, energized and mobilized cross-sectoral team. Building resilience is complex. The wide-ranging activities that form the Partnership for Resilience and Economic Growth (PREG) reflect that complexity.

A significant challenge to the stability and economic development of the communities living at the border areas of Kenya and Ethiopia is the lack of an adequate marketing infrastructure. An inadequate infrastructure increases the community’s vulnerability to drought by limiting access to markets and basic services and deters the investments needed to expand and diversify the economy.

I congratulate Moses and his team for picking this theme as it is timely and resonates with the global agenda to promote the development of women. Young women have such an important role in international affairs and should strive for achieving and reaching the highest levels within the field.

Ambassador Maalim, I recall our meeting on February 18, 2016, when both our organizations shared updates on the progress in the development of our strategies. I want to congratulate you and IGAD for completing your new five-year strategy. At USAID East Africa, we have also recently completed our East Africa Regional Development Cooperation Strategy (RDCS).

For many years, through support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other USAID global health initiatives, we have collaborated with the Government of Kenya to save and improve lives in Nairobi. The results of our partnership can be seen throughout the county. Recent health data reaffirm the gains we have made together in the health sector. The 2014 Demographic and Health Survey (or DHS) revealed that Nairobi is leading the way in nearly all HIV and maternal and child health indicators compared to the national average. Afya Jijini will build on these achievements and the lessons learned from its predecessor, APHIAplus.

President Obama underscored the importance of our cooperation during his trip to Kenya last year when he said, “America partners with Kenya in areas where you’re making enormous progress …on access to power, where Kenya is developing clean energy that can reach more people; on the important issue of climate change, where Kenya’s recent goal to reduce its emissions has put it in the position of being a leader on the continent.”

Good evening. It is a pleasure to join you as we mark what I am sure will be an extraordinary partnership between Stanford, one of the world’s premier universities, and so many of the great innovators and entrepreneurs here tonight. The Stanford SEED Transformation Program will bring new growth and innovation to Kenya through the promotion of business development and management skills. It will bring Silicon Valley ingenuity and the expertise of Stanford’s leading business faculty to help businesses across East Africa expand. And, ultimately, it will bring jobs and greater prosperity across Africa.

The U.S. Government is a committed to partnering with Kenya in improving the agricultural sector. We support Kenya through President Obama’s global initiative, Feed the Future, which aims to reduce poverty and stunting by 20 percent through improved technologies in agriculture. The Feed the Future Kenya Innovation Engine activity accelerates private-sector investment by sharing investors’ risk in backing innovations that address food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty across Kenya.

And in doing so, KCB is committing to not only the future of Kenya, but to all 14 of the countries our fellows hail from in East and Central Africa and, certainly, the entire continent.
