Willy Bett, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries
Distinguished guests
Ladies and gentlemen

Good morning!

USAID is honored to join the Cabinet Secretary, representatives of various stakeholders in the agriculture sector, and everyone here for this important event.

This launch of the Hermetic Storage Technology campaign represents one of the most important goals shared by the United States and Kenya: to transform the lives of millions of Kenyans by ensuring that they live in food secure households, eat nutritious foods and have opportunities for sustainable prosperity within their communities.

This supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and is the vision supported by the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future global hunger and food security initiative.

In 2013, the U.S. Government made a five year, $225 million dollar investment in inclusive agriculture-led economic growth, and the expansion of markets and trade in Kenya. We did this because we believe that agriculture is a driver of development.

Yet, even if a woman owns a computer or mobile phone, she won’t use it to its full potential if she lacks the necessary skills and confidence. USAID is proud that through our partnership in the Women and the Web Alliance, we are improving the digital literacy skills and confidence of women to use technology in improving their lives.

  • Thank you for arranging this meeting to discuss the important issues raised in your letter from August 28, 2015.
  • USAID agrees with MENR that spatial planning is a critical issue for wildlife security, particularly given Kenya’s context of devolution to county levels and rapid development trajectory.  Therefore, we are willing to support MENR to develop the National Wildlife Conservation and Management Strategy and the preparation of three pilot county spatial plans for Kajiado, Narok, and Taita Taveta.

For generations, the United States has been a leader in providing development assistance to alleviate suffering in Kenya and across the globe.  But food price spikes and resulting instability in 2007 and 2008 were a wake-up call: More needed to be done to break the vicious cycle of hunger and poverty.

USAID has a powerful partnership with Bomet, and there are so many things we have already achieved together.  We have been working in Bomet for a long time.   There’s a reason why you see the big USAID sign on the way to Tenwek Hospital.

I am honored to join you today for this Advocacy meeting on Accelerating the Attainment of Millennium Development Goal 5 in Kenya. Now, “Millennium Development Goal 5” is a pretty dry name. So let me put it another way. We are here today about the health of mothers. We are here about the health of families. We are here because Kenyans do not want their country to be one of the 10 most dangerous countries in the world for mothers to give birth. We are here about our shared future.

The findings of the “Women and the Web” study, commissioned by Intel in collaboration with the U.S. Government, show that we have an enormous opportunity to realize economic growth and productivity in African countries by closing the gender gap that currently exists in accessing the Internet.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is investing $4 million this year in Kenya’s immunization program.  Speaking as a donor, I can tell you that childhood immunization programs provide a very high return on investment. Vaccination services prevent illnesses, which reduce direct health costs and save millions of shillings in indirect costs, a fact I know Secretary Macharia appreciates.  More importantly, vaccination services save lives.
