It is my great pleasure to be here to celebrate KHANA's contribution to the HIV response in Cambodia and to launch the new strategic plan for 2016-2020. This event takes place at an important time, especially because of the 2030 global agenda and Cambodia's strong commitment to virtually eliminate new HIV infections by 2025. That’s five years earlier than the global goal!
USAID Cambodia aims to share relevant information to facilitate efforts to align United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) McGovern Dole efforts in Cambodia with ongoing and planned USAID Cambodia activities.
It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you today to this workshop. Giving every Cambodian child the opportunity to complete their education and reduce the number who dropout is a priority for the country. Education is a pathway to better opportunities for every person, their community, and their nation. That is why USAID is an important supporter of education programs around the world.
It is my great pleasure to see all of you here today for the “Launch of the Prey Lang Landscape Biodiversity Assessment Report.” Protecting Cambodia’s natural resources is a priority for the U.S. government and we are proud to have supported this important initiative.
USAID works closely with the Cambodian government to preserve and sustainably manage its forests and rich biodiversity. Our Supporting Forests and Biodiversity Project, which funds this Biodiversity Assessment, is one of the main ways that we do this.
Cambodia, a country of just over 15 million people in Southeast Asia, has spent the last 20 years rebuilding from decades of civil war. The country has made great progress, enjoying steady economic growth rates over the recent decade and significant improvements in quality of life. Having once had the region’s highest HIV rate, Cambodia cut its prevalence rate in half from 1998 to 2010 and has made incredible advances in its fight against tuberculosis and infant deaths.
