The Sustainable and Thriving Environments for West Africa Regional Development Program (STEWARD), a joint initiative of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Forest Service International Program in conjunction with the Mano River Union, is coming to an end after successfully working to improve natural resources management in the Upper Guinean Tropical Forest since 2007. STEWARD has helped to build a constituency for forest conservation and strengthen sustainable livelihoods in trans-boundary priority zones in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Today, U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Ecobank Cameroon SA announced a new partnership that will mobilize up to U.S. $3.7 million of local financing over eight years for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the health sector in Cameroon.  Financing will be made available via loans to health SMEs and NGOs which provide family planning, reproductive health and maternal/child health services or products.

Over 160 young leaders from 21 West African countries gathered in Accra, Ghana, to share their expertise and engage on critical issues for the future of Africa. In support of U.S. President Barack Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, USAID and IREX organized the 2nd West Africa Regional Conference for Mandela Washington Fellows in Accra from May 19 – 21, 2016. Fellows are leading social entrepreneurs, public servants, and community activists who are effecting positive change in their communities.
