USAID Supports Capacity Building in HIV Pediatric Care, Treatment and Management in Nghe An Province

Monday, September 5, 2016

As a result of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 scale-up and recent mobile reach-test-start missions undertaken with PEPFAR and USAID support, the SMART TA project and local partners have been able to identify unmet need for pediatric HIV care and treatment services at the district-level, including in Nghe An Province, where such services were previously only available at provincial-level. During a August 24-26 “Care, Treatment and Management for HIV Infected Children” training course in Vinh City, Nghe An, 53 pediatricians, nurses and chief physicians from 21 HIV treatment facilities learned how to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, undertake early detection of HIV pediatric infection, safely prescribe antiretroviral therapy, diagnose and manage common co-infections and co-morbidities and provide follow-up care for HIV-infected infants and children. As a result of this training, HIV-positive children in Nghe An will have increased access to quality HIV treatment at the district-level, leading to stronger treatment adherence and outcomes.
