Vietnam Shows Commitment to Protecting Wildlife through Destruction of Ivory and Rhino Horn

Sunday, November 20, 2016

On November 10, the USAID Mission Director witnessed Vietnamese authorities destroy 2,200 kg of ivory and 70 kg of rhino horn from their stockpile, putting 330 elephants and over 20 rhinos permanently to rest. Their remains will no longer be part of illegal wildlife trade.  The event, the first of its kind in Vietnam, is a significant symbol of commitment by the government. Vietnam has confiscated over 30,000 kg of ivory since 2010. USAID supports the Government of Vietnam’s commitment to effectively enforce international treaties and conservation laws to protect endangered and threatened species through a recently awarded, five-year project, USAID Saving Species.
