U.S. and Vietnam Issue Joint Announcement on Climate Change Partnership

Friday, May 27, 2016

Through the announcement made on May 22 during U.S. President Obama’s historic visit to Vietnam, Vietnam and the U.S. agreed to a partnership to work together to implement the historic Paris Agreement.

Under the partnership, the countries will transparently implement their respective Intended Nationally Determined Contributions and intend to work together to promote the timely development of effective modalities, procedures, and guidelines for the Paris Agreement. The U.S. and Vietnam recognize the importance of investment decisions in the next five years, particularly in the energy and land use sector, including agriculture, in shifting to a low emission economy to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, while maintaining economic growth.

Vietnam is a country vulnerable to climate change, and the United States intends to support efforts in building resilience, reducing risk from and preparing for the impacts of climate change. USAID/Vietnam co-led development of the partnership and joint announcement. For the full announcement, visit: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2016/05/257589.htm
