Climate Smart Farming Increases Profits for Smallholder Farmers

Thursday, November 10, 2016

USAID’s Vietnam Forests and Deltas Program (VFD) supports climate smart agricultural models that not only help increase yields but also reduce inputs and greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, VFD supported successful rice-fish rotation models in Hong Thuan, Hai An, and Nghia Hai communes in Nam Dinh province. Through training and capacity building support, farmers learned methods to treat pond beds and maintain good water quality, while at the same time inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms to limit disease outbreaks. The model has proven successful; rice production profits increased by $492 (11 million VND)/ha/crop, and by $1,600 (37 million VND)/ha/crop for fish raising. At the same time, farmers reported significant decreases in inputs, including using 28 kg less of urea/ha/crop, 250 kg less of NPK/ha/crop, and elimination of nearly all pesticide use by using bio-plant protection products.
