A recent study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has found a high HIV infection rate among farm workers in South Africa’s Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.
Conducted over three months (March to May 2010) on 23 commercial farms in the Malelane, Musina and Tzaneen areas, this Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (IBBSS) involved 2810 farm workers. The survey found that 39.5 percent of farm workers who anonymously gave blood specimens for testing are HIV positive. This is twice the national prevalence of 18.1 percent* in South Africa.
Ugu District, KwaZulu-Natal - The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Health (DoH) hopes to reach over 700,000 patients following the launch of a R32 million clinic revitalization program funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID funded the project through BroadReach Healthcare which provided technical support.
A total of ten clinics were identified for the upgrade through extensive assessments based on catchment population, HIV/AIDS prevalence and infrastructure needs. Ugu District has a staggering 40% HIV prevalence rate.

Uthungulu District; August 6, 2010: The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Health (DoH) can screen and treat one million women for cervical cancer in the next two years, following USAID’s donation of more than R5 million of specialty medical and surgical equipment, commemorating Women’s day and month.
On June 2nd, 2010, USAID hosted Jimmie Briggs, a journalist, author, and activist, on a visit to a Thuthuzela Care Center (TCC) in Tembisa, South Africa. He was in the country to promote his Man Up campaign. The campaign’s main focus is to create a following amongst youths globally to join efforts to prevent violence against women. USAID has been working with advocate Thoko Majokweni, the head of the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) Unit of South Africa’s National Prosecution Authority, to help launch multiple TCCs across South Africa.
