The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is investing $4 million this year in Kenya’s immunization program. Speaking as a donor, I can tell you that childhood immunization programs provide a very high return on investment. Vaccination services prevent illnesses, which reduce direct health costs and save millions of shillings in indirect costs, a fact I know Secretary Macharia appreciates. More importantly, vaccination services save lives.

I am so pleased to be here to mark another milestone in our 50-year partnership with Kenya.
We are here today because we recognize that Kenya is in a position to benefit from the positive effects of a demographic change. The country is overflowing with young and ambitious Kenyans eager to contribute to the development of the country. If we can move them responsibly into their working age years as healthy, educated and productive adults, with fewer dependents, they can lead the development process and elevate Kenya to a middle-income country.
Nairobi, July 15, 2014—United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Karen Freeman, joined Stephen Wainaina, Economic Secretary, Ministry of Devolution and Planning, and Dr. Josephine Kibaru, Director General of the National Council for Population and Development, to announce a new evidence-based tool, known as DemDiv, that informs policymakers of the potential benefits of the demographic dividend and the investments required to achieve those benefits.
Nairobi, July 10, 2014 – Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission in Kenya, Isiah Parnell, joined the Environment Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Dr. Alice Akinyi Kaudia, to jointly launch a new Environment and Natural Resource Management (ENRM) office for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) mission in Kenya. The new office will support the Government of Kenya’s goals, with a focus on climate change, water tower restoration, wildlife management and anti-trafficking, and low carbon resilient development.
