The USAID-funded 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) team began fieldwork in 11 regions today, kicking off the 4th demographic and health survey in the country since 2000. Fieldwork staff will survey over 18,000 Ethiopian households over the next four and half months, collecting data from women and men on a wide variety of issues including fertility and family planning, water and sanitation, malaria, nutrition, child health, mortality, HIV, and domestic violence.
The Women in Agribusiness Leadership Network, through the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Agribusiness Market Development and Livestock Market Development activities, honored the winners of the 2015 Business Plan Competition at its second annual conference today with the Rahel Mulatu Poultry Farm earning the top award. USAID also gave certificates to new network members who completed the six-month leadership and business training and mentorship program and awarded a total of $1.1 million in innovation grants to 13 women entrepreneurs.
During the official annual meeting of the Holy Synod, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC), his Holiness Abune Matias I, formally blessed and endorsed a nutrition sermon guide which instructs to forgo fasting during the first 1000 days (from conception to age two) for mothers and their babies. The sermon guide, developed by EOTC in collaboration with USAID’s flagship multi-sector nutrition project, Empowering New Generations to Improve Nutrition and Economic opportunities (ENGINE), emphasizes the importance of consuming a nutritious diet including animal source foods in order to prevent maternal under nutrition and childhood stunting.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced an additional $88 million in humanitarian assistance for Ethiopia today to address the humanitarian crisis resulting from the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. The additional aid brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance for Ethiopia to more than $435 million since October 2014 and increases funding for nutrition, food, sanitation, and hygiene support.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support partner organizations in their efforts to end preventable child and maternal deaths in support of the objectives of the Government of Ethiopia’s new Health Sector Transformation Plan.
