The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources joined the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) today to launch Phase IV of the USAID/MASHAV/Ethiopia Joint Cooperation Project in Smallholder Horticulture. By building a stronger, more productive commercial horticulture sector, the Smallholder Horticulture Project aims to increase smallholder incomes and foreign currency earnings while making these nutritious crops more available to Ethiopian consumers.
Ethiopian Minister of Health Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu and USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller led a groundbreaking ceremony today to kick off construction for the National Blood Transfusion Service Center. The new center will provide the Ministry of Health with additional capacity to receive donations, screen and process blood products, and distribute life-saving products to serve approximately 26 million Ethiopians.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director in Ethiopia Dennis Weller, together with His Excellency Kebede Gerba, the state minister of the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, launched a new fluoride filter manufacturing facility today. Developed as a result of USAID’s grant to the Oromo Self Help Organization, the investment will help mitigate fluorosis in the Ethiopian Rift Valley through innovative fluoride reduction products and services.
On World Water Day, the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), launched USAID Lowland WASH, a new water, sanitation and hygiene activity, to support the Government of Ethiopia’s One WASH National Program in pastoral areas of Afar, Somali, and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples regions. The new activity will increase the availability of improved sustainable drinking water sources, increase access to better sanitation products and services, catalyze enhanced sanitation and hygiene behaviors, and build capacity for enhanced knowledge and data management, while also expanding sustainable water use for agriculture.
The U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Patricia M. Haslach officially launched HelloCash today in the presence of the Somali Regional State President His Excellency Abdi Mohamud Omar. Launched in partnership with the Somali Microfinance Institution, HelloCash is the first sharia-compliant, mobile money service in Ethiopia. Over the next three years, the new service expects to have 780,000 mobile banking users with projected transactions of $12 million annually through loans, savings, and money transfer services. HelloCash will also create employment opportunities for at least 2,000 households as agents, marketers, and service providers.
