USAID Mission Director to Egypt Dr. Mary C. Ott speaks with job fair participants

Alexandria – Over 12,000 job seekers met with representatives from 120 companies and hotels today at the U.S. government-sponsored Alexandria Employment Fair.  Over 2,000 job seekers found employment at similar U.S. government-sponsored job fairs in Luxor and Beni Suef earlier this year.

“Employment fairs are one way that the U.S. government has committed to helping Egypt create a strong economy with good jobs and skilled workers,” said Dr. Mary C. Ott, USAID/Egypt’s Mission Director.  “I am proud to say that USAID’s support for strengthening vocational schools and supporting employment fairs has helped thousands of recent graduates find new jobs.”

This week, 14.3 million Egyptian children under the age of 5 will be vaccinated against polio in the Ministry of Health and Population’s national polio immunization campaign.  The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is contributing to the overall goal of sustaining Egypt’s polio-free status by supporting the logistics and operations of the campaign.

A U.S. government delegation, including State Department Counselor Ambassador Thomas Shannon, Chargé d’Affaires Marc Sievers, and USAID Mission Director Dr. Mary C. Ott visited the USAID-supported Maadi Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) High School for Girls today to congratulate its two teams of national science fair winners.

Over 5,000 job seekers met with representatives from 50 companies and hotels at the U.S. government-sponsored Luxor Employment Fair. “The U.S. Government is committed to helping Egypt create a strong economy with good jobs and educated workers,” said Dr. William Patterson, USAID/Egypt Economic Growth Director.  “USAID’s support for employment fairs and employment and training in vocational school units is an important step on the path to building a stronger economy in Egypt.”

Over 150 entrepreneurs, 20 mentors, four judges, and U.S. and Egyptian government officials participated in the Luxor StartUp Weekend entrepreneurship competition from March 6-8, 2014. “The U.S. Government believes in the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation in driving Egypt’s economy forward,” said Dr. William Patterson, Economic Growth Director at USAID/Egypt.  “In the past four years, the U.S. Agency for International Development - USAID - has helped thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into action. These businesses will create jobs and add value to the Egyptian economy.”
