Over 300 Egyptians generated recommendations today to strengthen the consumer protection law in Egypt at an event in Alexandria sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  Organized in coordination with the Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) and three civil society groups, this event increased public awareness of consumer rights and regulations.

“USAID has been supporting the rights of Egyptian consumers since 2006,” said Dr. Mary C. Ott, Director of the USAID mission in Egypt.  “As consumers, we expect the products we buy to be safe and meet certain standards.  We applaud Egypt’s civil society for raising consumers’ awareness and assisting them in exercising their rights.”

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that U.S.-based Democracy International (DI) will observe the upcoming presidential election. The Egyptian Presidential Election Commission recently accredited DI, as well as five other international organizations and 79 Egyptian organizations, to observe the presidential election process in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and international commitments.

Today, 19 Egyptian firms completed extensive training through USAID on key aspects of export trade.  They attended four international trade shows over the past year that resulted in $1.4 million in sales orders received at shows and $5 million in projected future orders. 

As a result of the nurses' training program, infection rates decreased in Luxor, Aswan, and Qena.

Today, more than 100 health professionals celebrated the completion of a five-year program sponsored by the U.S. and Egyptian governments to improve the performance of nurses in Egypt. The project strengthened the management and leadership skills of 780 nurses in Upper Egypt, who in turn trained more than 1,000 additional health care professionals. As a result of this program, infection rates decreased and clinical care realized life-saving improvements in Qena, Luxor, and Aswan.

Cairo – Today, over 120 experts in entrepreneurship participated in a U.S. government-sponsored conference focused on increasing the number of women entrepreneurs in Egypt.

“Entrepreneurship plays a significant role in driving economic growth and job creation,” said Dr. Mary C. Ott, USAID Mission Director in Egypt.  “USAID is working to build the entrepreneurial capacity of women to develop businesses that will generate income for their families and to drive economic growth in Egypt.”
