Since the start of the January 2011 revolution, USAID’s portfolio in Egypt has focused on responding to the Egyptian people’s demands for jobs, accountability, and rights. In the wake of the events of July 3, these priorities remain intact. We will continue to work with the Egyptian people to address their legitimate aspirations for economic opportunities and democratic governance.
USAID’s assistance program in Egypt is a cornerstone of our bilateral relationship, and we are proud of the accomplishments we have made over the last thirty years. Just to highlight a few accomplishments, USAID has achieved significant impact in increasing access to education. Our recently completed early grade reading program improved fluency by 91 percent in pilot schools, and the scaled-up project reached 1.4 million students in all grade-one classrooms across Egypt. Our assistance has awarded 185,000 scholarships to girls and built nearly 100 schools (serving over 44,000 students) in underserved communities throughout the country.
The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Alexandria University announced the launch of the first Innovation and Entrepreneurship Day for technical school students at an event highlighting the role of vocational education in supporting a strong and successful private sector.
Ismailia – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the American University in Cairo (AUC), and Suez Canal University (SCU) celebrated the launch of the Employability and Career Development Center (ECDC), which will help students at SCU increase their chances of landing satisfactory employment upon graduation. Ms. Lisa Franchett, Director of Education and Training Office at USAID in Egypt; AUC President Dr. Lisa Anderson; and SCU President Dr. Mohamed A. Mohamadein participated in the inauguration and ribbon cutting of the new ECDC office at SCU’s Ismailia campus.
Cairo – Nearly 100 judges of Egypt’s Council of State recently participated in a workshop that focused on increasing expertise in judging administrative appeals related to all forms of intellectual property. The workshop was sponsored by the Council of State and the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The workshop aimed to strengthen Egypt’s system of granting protection for intellectual property by developing the skills of those who hear appeals on decisions of Government administrative agencies, including the Patent, Trademark, Industrial Designs, and Plant Variety Protection Offices.
Cairo – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Egyptian Industrial Development Authority, the Egyptian National Cleaner Production Center, and the World Environment Center, has launched a pilot project that helps small and medium-sized food processing firms to conserve energy resources and increase their use of cleaner forms of energy while improving the sustainability and competitiveness of their businesses.
