International Research & Science Programs

Through international research and science programs, USAID and developing country scientists are bringing innovative approaches to meet the world’s toughest development challenges. We build partnerships between scientists and their communities in the U.S. and developing countries in order to:
  • Empower developing country scientists to build the capacity of their own countries and address critical development challenges with innovative solutions
  • Leverage the expertise, investments, and resources of U.S. government science agencies to more effectively tackle the global challenges faced by both the U.S. and developing countries
  • Use science and technology as a common language for enhanced bilateral engagement that strengthens the global scientific and research ecosystem
  • Build robust interpersonal relationships, which foster broader scientific progress
  • Drive innovation through supporting new endeavors in science and technology

To this end, USAID supports a range of programs and activities, including:
  • Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER), a research grants program in which developing country scientists partner with U.S. government-supported researchers.  Through PEER, we support researchers in PEER-eligible countries in building and enhancing scientific capacity to address large, complex development issues.
  • Bilateral relationships with other countries, such as the Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation Program, through which both governments have supported approximately 70 research projects that reflect Pakistani development goals and USAID priorities.
  • Partnerships with federal science agencies and academia to leverage U.S. Government investments and expertise in research and development for more efficient use of resources from taxpayers and to catalyze outcomes of international programs in science and technology.
  • Capacity building across the science and technology ecosystem through partnerships with organizations such as Seeding Labs to create and support a culture of sustainable scientific research and productivity
