Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) expanded their partnership to promote peace and security, address energy challenges, and support trade activities in the region. With these amended agreements, USAID will provide an additional U.S. $ 23.6 million of support for activities promoting the following ECOWAS priorities:
Cotonou, Benin – Today, a Road Governance Caravan, co-organized by USAID and the Borderless Alliance, made the final stop of its journey along the main north-south commercial corridor in Benin. The aim of the Caravan was to identify transport costs and delays along the route so measures can be taken to reduce them, and ultimately to increase the flow of trade. Cotonou was the fourth of five stops the Caravan made in major towns along the corridor from June 23–30.
Accra, GHANA – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Family Health International and the Futures Group, is hosting a regional workshop on vulnerable populations in West and Central Africa that are disproportionately affected by HIV. Workshop participants will focus on service delivery and policies, with the aim of improving strategies for HIV prevention, treatment and care among these populations.
Elimina, Ghana – More than 40 policymakers, researchers and practitioners participated in a four-day workshop in Ghana on West Africa Mangroves – A Key to Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Accra, Ghana – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is holding a two-day workshop in Accra, Ghana, to develop a roadmap on how the public and private sectors can collaborate to improve and expand health services in West Africa. Discussions will highlight the findings of two reports on the private health sector and mobile technology for health (mHealth in the region. The reports underline the role and contribution of the private sector and mHealth applications to reproductive health and family planning as well as HIV/AIDS interventions.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – More than 400 individuals representing every aspect of the shea industry are gathered in Abidjan for Shea 2014: The Industry Unites, the annual conference of the Global Shea Alliance. From March 24 to 26, 2014, experts will present the latest information on industry trends, production techniques and the international market for shea, as well as practical information about the shea business.
Lagos, Nigeria – The Borderless 2014 Conference, from February 26 -28, 2014, in Lagos, brings together trade and investment professionals to focus on eliminating barriers to trade in West Africa. The conference was organized by the Borderless Alliance, in conjunction with the Nigeria Export Import Bank (NEXIM), with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
OUAGADOUGOU – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is conducting a study tour to the United States for 12 staff members of the Burkina Faso Ministry of Water Resources from February 22 to March 6, 2014.
“Through this workshop, USAID will help policy makers and planners learn how to take climate risks and adaptation options into account when managing development programs, particularly those relating to water resources management,” said Bradley Wallach, USAID West Africa Acting Mission Director. “We are bringing together representatives of public services, private companies, academic and research institutions as well as organizations that work in the areas of environment and climate change, water management, and the design and construction of water and sanitation infrastructure.”
