Sharing long borders with Afghanistan and Iran and serving as a key link to South Asia, Turkmenistan sits astride a significant geostrategic location and plays an important role in advancing regional integration. After years of centralized control, the United States supports Turkmenistan in taking steps to emerge from isolation and to foster a more open and integrated society.
USAID works with the people, private sector and Government of Turkmenistan to strengthen and diversify the economy, build up nascent civil society institutions, increase good governance and expand access to health care services. As part of the USAID Mission to Central Asia, USAID in Turkmenistan also supports regional goals, including under the U.S. Government’s New Silk Road initiative, which increases regional connections between the economies and peoples of Central and South Asia — including Afghanistan — to foster greater stability and prosperity
