USAID’s Avansa Agrikultura Project is committed to the development of a sustainable, market driven agriculture sector in Timor-Leste. To achieve greater impact, it is critical to collaborate with various government entities, private sector organizations and other NGOs. On September 16, the project signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education (MoE) to jointly promote and deliver activities to improve nutrition and good hygiene practices and thereby address the key challenges of rural poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition.
Honorable Minister Estanislau Alexio da Silva, U.S. Ambassador to Timor-Leste Karen Stanton, and USAID Assistant Administrator Jonathan Stivers formally launched today USAID’s Avansa Agrikultura Project. This new US$19.2 million agriculture project, which is made possible by the generous support of the American people, will develop links between farmers and markets to stimulate economic growth in rural areas and address rural poverty, natural resource degradation, food insecurity, and malnutrition.
One of USAID’s main objectives in Timor-Leste is to partner with the government and people to accelerate inclusive economic growth in the agricultural sector, improve Timorese citizens’ ability to engage in the private sector, and increase the productivity of selected agriculture value chains. Since about 80 percent of Timor-Leste’s population relies on agriculture for their livelihoods, USAID focuses on accelerating inclusive economic growth for farm households in the country’s rural areas. Our partnerships support activities aimed at boosting output above subsistence levels and improving incomes by increasing farm productivity and establishing links to markets.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded a new water and sanitation project in Timor-Leste. The Improving Community Resilience in Oecusse Project will assist 25 communities in 13 villages in the Municipality to have better access to clean, safe water, improve sanitation and hygiene practices, and strengthen community organizations to operate and maintain water and sanitation facilities. World Neighbors, an international non-governmental organization with experience in Oecusse, will conduct the three-year project.
Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded its new agriculture project in Timor-Leste. Recognizing the tremendous potential of rural communities as high quality fruit and vegetable producers, USAID welcomes Cardno Emerging Markets and its partners HIAM Health, The Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture/Texas A&M AgriLife Research, and SSG Advisors as the implementers for USAID's Avansa Agrikultura (Advancing Agriculture) Project.
