n April 2014, USAID's Southern Africa Trade Hub supported Agritech Expo, Zambia's first outdoor agricultural event servicing the needs of the entire agricultural value chain. Over 8,000 participants including suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, agents and service providers attended the event at the GART Research Centre in Chisamba where the latest agricultural technology and farming solutions were showcased to farmers throughout the region in partnership with the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU).
Source Africa 2014 took place June 18-20 in Cape Town, South Africa, supported by USAID's Southern Africa Trade Hub and valued partners LTE, the American Apparel and Footwear Association, and the African Cotton & Textile Industries Federation. The pan-African Textiles and Apparel trade show drew 1,185 visitors, up 25% from last year's inaugural event.
May 19, 2014: Nature Seychelles in collaboration with Black Pearl Farm Ltd is beginning a project to restore giant clams in the waters of Praslin, where aquaculture-raised giant clams (Tridacna maxima) will be translocated. Roald and Kari Nilsen of Black Pearl Farm will donate 120 aquaculture-raised giant clams for re-introduction into the wild. The Nature Seychelles' Reef Rescuers project previously translocated 30 clams from Black Pearl Farm as an experimental pilot program. It forms part of the USAID-funded coral reef restoration project.
The benchmarking mission was co-sponsored by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. as part of USAID’s Partnership for Trade Facilitation Standards Alliance technical assistance. NIST is the federal technology agency that works with US industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards, while ANSI is the voice of the US standards and conformity assessment system. Worldwide standards are central to the development and commercialization of new technologies as well as the facilitation of regional and international trade. Over 80% of world merchandise trade is affected by standards.
USAID grant strengthens an important private sector partner to improve farmer incomes in Zambia
Strategic Partnership Grants
The grant to AFGRI is part of USAID’s Strategic Partnership Grant (SPG) Program, which encourages private sector investment from South African organizations into the Feed-the-Future focus countries of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia starting with the maize, soy and groundnut value chains. The objectives of the SPG are to:
- Improve regional food security though increased private sector investment in agriculture
- Accelerate the transfer of improved production (includ-ing inputs), processing, storage, and marketing technologies to actors within the maize, soy and ground-nut value chains
- Expand and improve part-nerships between South African and regional companies and organizations
