CHALLENGE

Helping young South Africans achieve their potential demands a greater investment in literacy skills of primary grade learners in a rural areas.  This challenge is being addressed through enhancing teachers’ skills and recruiting and training community members to serve as literacy volunteers.

The Umbrella Grants Management Project (UGM) is a five-year grants management program administered by FHI 360 with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Through UGM, FHI 360 provides funding and technical assistance (TA) to USAID-selected nongovernmental organization (NGO) partners who provide HIV and AIDS services at local, provincial and national levels in South Africa. FHI 360-UGM seeks to promote high quality service delivery in alignment with the priorities and goals of the South African government’s HIV and AIDS framework.

The May‟khethele program was launched in October 2007 in the uMgungundlovu district of KwaZulu-Natal and aims to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through the provision of a comprehensive range of services. The programme operates at two levels. It provides school-based HIV education and HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT); and personalised, household level attention for OVCs who are identified and enrolled in the programme. The programme uses a consortium approach.

CHALLENGE

Improving primary grade reading is critically important to the success of South African children. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers must have the skills to deliver quality education. To improve primary grade reading outcomes, Ukusiza will strengthen teacher professional development by developing and distributing high-quality digital teacher training content.

This evaluation of the Networks of Hope Program was conducted by Rural Outreach and Development Services (ROADS). ROADS was contracted by Pact on behalf of USAID to evaluate the World Vision’s Network of Hope (NOH) Program for addressing the needs of OVC in six Area Develop Projects (ADP) with the goal of improving their quality of life and resilience in the face of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa.
