BELGRADE – On September 19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a U.S. government agency, and the High Court Council (HCC) of Serbia celebrated the achievements of USAID’s “Institutional Strengthening of the High Court Council” activity—a $500,000 project to support Serbia’s judicial reform efforts.

“USAID’s support to the High Court Council in its effort to reform the judiciary has moved Serbia one step closer towards realizing the goals outlined in the Action Plan of the National Judicial Reform Strategy 2013-2018,” said Dragomir Milivojević, the President of the High Court Council.

“The High Court Council plays a central role in establishing an effective judiciary that serves the needs of the Serbian people,” said USAID Mission Director Azza El-Abd. “The United States has partnered with Serbia to strengthening the judiciary for more than a decade – ours is a longstanding partnership.”

NOVI SAD – The first ICT Cluster Academy was launched in Novi Sad today. Through training, specialized courses and practical work, the students of the Academy of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will acquire the knowledge and skills that will enable them to find employment more easily. Upon completion of the six month training, the students will receive internships in firms that are members of the Vojvodina ICT Cluster.

USAID Strengthens Regional Investment Community through Angel Investing

Belgrade – A USAID-sponsored regional “Introducing Angel Investment” conference presented best practices in the area of angel investing with the goal of developing, improving, and professionalizing angel capital networks in Serbia and the region.  The conference was opened by USAID’s Mission Director Susan K. Fritz. Angel investors provide financial backing for small start-ups or entrepreneurs usually in exchange for an ownership stake in the business.

NOVI SAD The Minister of Justice Nikola Selaković and the USAID Mission Director Susan K. Fritz visited the newly renovated Novi Sad Misdemeanor Court. This court, the second-largest in the country, was renovated with USAID funds. Dragomir Milojević, President of the High Court Council and the Supreme Court of Cassation, and Zoran Pašalić, President of the Appellate Misdemeanor Court also participated in the visit.

USAID and the Supreme Cessation Court Present National Backlog Reduction Plan

BELGRADE - USAID and the Supreme Cassation Court of the Republic of Serbia met with the presidents of all Serbian courts at the Palace of Justice.  Chief Justice Dragomir Milojevic presented the National Backlog Reduction Plan, which calls for an 80 percent reduction within the next five years of the nearly 1.75 million old cases that have been plaguing the Serbian court system. “This goal may be ambitious but it is attainable with a lot of hard work by judges,” he said, encouraging court presidents to use the methods that have already proven to be successful by ten USAID pilot courts. 

United States and Serbia Launch Project to  Create Jobs and Improve the Quality of Life in South and Southwest Serbia

Belgrade, November 2013 – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has begun directly funding Serbian organizations to strengthen their capacity and to use USAID assets more efficiently. 

USAID recently awarded grants to five Serbian organizations, recognizing their increased capabilities and placing full responsibility for managing the programs in their hands:

·         A 15-month, $248,800 grant to Civic Initiatives to improve the status of youth and reduce their marginalization in southern and southwestern Serbia;
