The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) helped more than two hundred Pakistanis farmers bring off-season vegetables to the second annual Vegetable Fair in Islamabad today.
Islamabad, April 2, 2015 – Over the past two years, the Balochistan Agricultural Project sponsored by the U.S. government has helped a group of 12 farmers dramatically increase their income to over $670,000 from the sale of dried mulberries. In 2013, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) developed the program to work directly with farmers from the Mastung district in Balochistan to research and expand the market for mulberries across Pakistan.
The Dairy Project helps USAID meet its goal of improving the economic lives of Pakistani citizens by improving the performance of firms in the agricultural sector. The Dairy Project seeks to boost the incomes of small dairy farmers in Punjab by providing training on best practices in dairy production.
The project constructs onfarm irrigation system on 15,500 acres of land downstream from the Satpara Dam in Gilgit Baltistan to provide better supply of irrigation water and therefore increase the availability of fodder and productivity of the region's highvalue fruit and vegetable crops.
