REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CENTER SOUTHERN AFRICA COHORT 10 (25 SEPTEMBER – 20 OCTOBER, 2017) AND COHORT 11 (6 NOVEMBER – 1 DECEMBER, 2017)
U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique, Mr. Dean Pittman, visited Sofala Province from 16th to 18th of May 2017 to meet officials and survey US assistance to the Province. US Agency for International Development (USAID) officials, Alonzo Wind, USAID Southern Africa Acting Mission Director, and Theodora Dell, USAID Mozambique Acting Deputy Director accompanied the Ambassador as part of the U.S. delegation.
Mozambique stands at a crossroads in its national development trajectory. The quality of leadership during the next five years will determine whether the country’s citizens are able to participate broadly in emerging economic opportunities and a more open political order that prioritizes human development and achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
Gender-based Violence (GBV) is a global pandemic that is inflicted upon men, women and children. However, women and girls are the most at risk and most affected by GBV. Gender-based violence undermines the safety, dignity, health, and human rights of the millions of individuals who experience it, and the public health, economic well-being, and security of nations. The Gender-based Violence Initiative (GBVI) in Mozambique is part of the United States President’s Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and aims to expand and improve coordination and effectiveness of GBV prevention efforts; improve the policy implementation in response to GBV and improve the availability and quality of GBV services in Mozambique.
A few months ago, USAID and the Ministry of Education launched the project "Aprender a Ler" to improve reading skills for students in grades 2 and 3. This pilot project will begin by covering 120 schools in Nampula and Zambezia provinces. Last week, the project was launched at provincial level in Nampula, at Lurio Hotel, alongside with the Nampula’s Governor, Mrs. Cidália Manuel Chauque. Amongst participants were also Nampula’s Director of Education and cultural affairs, Dr. Raúl Nhamunwe and the Ministry of Education’s National Directors of Planning and Primary schooling, Dr. Manuel Rego and Dr. Antuía Soverano respectively. Some school staff from the 3 districts where the project will be implemented, namely Nampula, Monapo, Morrupula, were also present to learn more about the various project activities.
