Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – On April 4, 2013, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided computer hardware, advanced geological modeling software, and other Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic through the USAID REFORMA Project. Kyrgyz Minister of the Economy Temir Sariev and USAID Representative to the Kyrgyz Republic Carey Gordon participated in the handover event.  The equipment, valued at over $70,000, will provide the Mineral Resources Policy Department of the Ministry of Economy with crucial tools to improve the department’s daily operations, including human resource development, and to lead sector growth.  The Ministry of Economy plays a key role in undertaking and implementing reforms that improve the overall business environment, including the mining sector.

The USAID REFORMA Project also supports the Ministry of Economy in creating its Medium and Long-Term Development Strategy for the Mineral Resources Sector.  This project involves stakeholders across the legislative, regulatory, fiscal, environmental, educational, and social spheres in the discussion of policy choices to ensure that the strategy reflects leading international practices and the preferences of stakeholders within the Kyrgyz Republic.

At the equipment handover event, USAID Representative to the Kyrgyz Republic Carey Gordon said, “The Ministry of Economy plays a vital role in promoting economic growth across the country.  The Ministry is undertaking major economic reforms in the licensing and regulatory sphere, fiscal policy, trade and investment, and industry sector development. Given the importance of the Ministry in leading overall economic development, USAID is honored to work with the Ministry to help it develop better economic policies that support business growth and investment.”
