Reading Together Project Celebrates

On December 12, 2013 the Ministry of Education and Science and USAID’s Reading Together Project will celebrate the 85th birthday of the great writer Chingiz Aitmatov.  In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyz Republic there will be lessons in the elementary grades devoted to the works of Chingiz Aitmatov. The purpose of the event is to celebrate Chingiz Aitmatov’s achievements, introduce students to his works and to promote reading of books for children of all ages.  In Bishkek “The First Teacher” will be read throughout the city at schools and also by volunteers on the streets.

Barbara Greenwood, Chief of Party for USAID’s Reading Together Project stated, “The First Teacher’ brings to life Duishen, a teacher of school and life.  Chingiz Aitmatov paints a picture through words, and I cannot think of a greater gift to bring to children and families than to read and appreciate such great writers.  Reading is important at so many levels including enjoyment. ‘The First Teacher’ will be travelling with us throughout the life of the program providing reading opportunities to children of all ages and encouraging families to read at home.”

The Reading Together Project implemented by the American Institute for Research and Save the Children main objective is to improve the reading skills of children in primary school. USAID has been providing education assistance to the Kyrgyz Republic since 2002. 

The Reading Together Project is one of the many assistance projects supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
