Kosovo Program Updates

Several recent regional workshops held throughout Kosovo focused on the successes and challenges in inclusive vocational training in Kosovo.  The first in the series of these workshops held in Gjilan/Gnjilane was attended by 35 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Divisions for Vocational Training Centers (VTC), Divisions for Monitoring and Coordinating Employment Offices, the Ministry of Communities and Returns, the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, Municipal Offices for Communities and Returns (MOCR’s), and private businesses from Gjilan/Gnjilane region.

As part of its ongoing efforts to institutionalize business registration reforms and further improve the business registration process, the Kosovo Business Registration Agency (KBRA) with support from our USAID Partnerships for Development Program, held a series of four regional workshops with municipal business registration officers from the central and municipal levels.

Morning for some is 8AM but for a farmer 8AM is midday, as we were told during a visit to Laki Farm, a goat cheese processor in Zvecan on a cold December day. The visit to Kosovo’s northern municipalities was the last USAID field trip for 2016 and it gave USAID Mission Director James Hope and his team an opportunity to meet with many of the beneficiaries in northern Kosovo.

Some 55 young ‪Kosovars currently studying in the United States gathered January 11-13 for a for a two-day retreat in Washington, DC. The annual conference brings the students together for discussions on leadership development, their plans and ideas or the future, and how they will both contribute to Kosovo society upon returning home.

In early November, staff and students at the University of Prishtina’s Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine took the first x-ray of an animal in Kosovo. Professor Daniël Cronk from the University of Minnesota led a week-long workshop on radiology, setting up and using radiology equipment at the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary. “The radiology equipment had been sitting unused for a year at the faculty,” explained professor Cronk. “We took the time to walk through how to use the equipment in detail during the workshop.”
