Charge d’Affaires Colleen Hyland spoke at an event marking the International Day of the Girl Child. This year’s theme was #DadsandDaughters, with a focus on gender equality within families, specifically related to inheritance and property rights. In her remarks, CDA Hyland highlighted the challenges that women in Kosovo face in owning and inheriting property, and the effect of women’s economic exclusion on the economy as a whole.
Due to political conditions in this small Balkan country, it is challenging for many Kosovo businesses to create new partnerships within their own ethnic community—let alone to build trust with a business from a different region or ethnic community.
In 2015, during an overwhelmingly fruitful first season, they sold 6 tons of raspberries, generating an income of about $12,400. For their second season, the couple quickly expanded their farm by more than fourfold, to 3.2 acres. As a result, they now expect to bring in a larger harvest—and greater profit.
USAID is helping Kosovo’s courts resolve cases more efficiently and reduce processing delays through its Justice System Strengthening Program. In its first year of operations, the program has already yielded significant results.
At Lane kindergarten in Kosovo’s municipality of Zvečan/Zveçan, 330 children learn, play together, and explore their world with energy and curiosity. Despite an excellent learning environment, Lane faced threats of closure last year following a kitchen health inspection. The kitchen simply did not meet minimum food safety standards.
