Smallholder farmers produce 75 percent of the food in Kenya. Many of these farmers rely on seasonal rains.  However, Jane Kisia, a 50-year-old farmer in Nyando Sub-county, Kisumu County, stopped cultivating her farm when the rainy seasons became inconsistent. No farmer is willing to invest large sums of money in inputs for a low-yield return. The fields were left bare.

This is the question facing Parliament in the coming months.

In November, USAID invited a network of women political leaders to discuss the challenges of implementing the two-thirds gender rule – a constitutional requirement that no more than two-thirds of any elected and appointed body be made up of members of one gender.

In the 2013 general elections, only 84 women were elected to the 2,227-seat assembly. To conform to the two-thirds ceiling, 680 women were nominated to the assembly.

USAID is rolling out a portfolio of programs to expand community-led conservation in biologically important areas, particularly northern Kenya and the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. In addition, the programs will ramp up on-the-ground efforts to stop illegal wildlife poaching and trafficking.

International partners and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials met today to discuss preparations for the 2017 general elections and to review current donor support for the IEBC Secretariat. We reaffirmed together our commitment to free, fair, peaceful and transparent elections and discussed the steps the IEBC is taking to strengthen its capacity and improve public trust and participation in the electoral process.
