The Free Maternity Services policy introduced in 2013 has greatly increased demand for health services For this reason, in addition to providing medical equipment to hospitals, ample space in these facilities for health services is also necessary. We have worked with counties, including Machakos, to meet this need by renovating maternal and newborn units, including hospitals in Kangundo and Athi River.
Yet, even if a woman owns a computer or mobile phone, she won’t use it to its full potential if she lacks the necessary skills and confidence. USAID is proud that through our partnership in the Women and the Web Alliance, we are improving the digital literacy skills and confidence of women to use technology in improving their lives.
In 2013 the Government of Kenya endorsed a national strategy to devolve administrative powers from the central government to the 47 counties across the country. The goal of devolution is to develop a governance system that is more transparent, accountable, responsive to citizens and effective in service delivery.
In Kenya, many rural households rely on small-scale farming for livelihoods. For instance, Fredrick Mwachofi, a 47-year-old father of four, is a dairy farmer in Mwatate Sub-county in Taita Taveta County.
Many rural households rely on agriculture to break the cycle of poverty and food insecurity. Jackeline Achieng’, a 35-year-old mother of five in Kisumu County, resigned from a job as a domestic helper to engage in agribusiness, specifically dairy farming. The meager Kenyan Shillings 1,500 ($16) per month she was earning could not cover household expenses and left no time to engage in meaningful farming.
