April 25, Nairobi – USAID Kenya Deputy Mission Director, Dr. Tina Dooley-Jones attended the graduation of 30 Kenyan government officials who will participate in evaluating Government of Kenya investments in the power sector.

The officers attended a four-week long training to strengthen  their economic and financial analysis skills in order to improve project decision making and recommendations for resource allocation in the power sector.

“USAID and the U.S. Government are committed to supporting development in the power sector, particularly since President Obama launched the Power Africa Initiative last year, for which Kenya is a partner country. This is an investment that can pay great dividends to the people of Kenya.  The public investments deserve rigorous analysis before hard-earned revenues are committed,” said Dr. Dooley-Jones.

USAID Kenya and the Power Africa team contributed to the development of the curriculum for this training.  The U.S. Government’s Power Africa initiative brings together 12 U.S. Government agencies to help move African power deals through the pipeline to completion, with an aim of doubling access to electricity in all of sub-saharan Africa.

The Kenya School of Government plays an essential role in capacity development and has been a key USAID partner in development. Last year, USAID partnered with the School to develop a program on Investment Appraisal that received strong support and commitment from Ministry of Devolution and Planning, Ministry of Finance, Treasury, and other key Government of Kenya entities.

USAID invests Ksh 24 billion in Power Africa to provide assistance in the energy sector. USAID is committed to providing technical assistance and grants that will advance private sector energy transactions. It will also help governments adopt and implement the policies and other reforms necessary to attract private sector investment in the energy and power sectors.
