Accra, GHANA—On August 24, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the U.S. government’s Feed the Future Initiative, launched the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG), in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other development partners. NASTAG is a partnership between producers, traders, government institutions and processors in the seed industry. The Association aims to spur private sector investment and promote the use of high-quality certified seed. In attendance were, USAID/Ghana Agriculture Team Leader Jenna Tajchman and Deputy Minister of Agriculture Honorable Dr. Sagre Bambangi, who highlighted the importance of growing Ghana’s seed industry to build a food secure future.

At the event, seven new Executive Council Members of the Association were inducted into office to grow the competitiveness of Ghana’s seed industry. The Executive Council will work to strengthen the business and technical skills of its members, promote collaboration between seed value chain actors, and advocate on regulations, standardization and the provision of general seed information to all stakeholders.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministry of Health, and the Ghana Health Service launched the refreshed “Good Life, Live it Well” campaign on July 28 at the National Theatre. The “Good Life, Live It Well” campaign will serve as the overarching Ghana Health Service brand and will promote positive health behaviors through television, radio, social media, and print materials. U.S. Ambassador Robert P. Jackson, government of Ghana officials, and members of the public were present at the launch event.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the National Peace Council, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – officially launched the “National Election Early Warning and Response Group” (NEEWARG) on Tuesday July 26, 2016 in Accra. The primary objective of this Group is to discuss, develop, and recommend strategies to mitigate threats to the peaceful conduct of the 2016 elections.

On June 7, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Education launched the distribution of over 4 million books in English and local Ghanaian languages to public primary schools in all 216 districts.  The aim is to improve the reading skills of nearly 2.8 million primary school students, enhance education policies and management systems, as well as strengthen parent, school and local government capacity to promote reading. The books will provide more access to reading materials and enrich the reading environment for kindergarten to primary 3 pupils in all of Ghana. U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Robert P. Jackson and Minister of Education, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang delivered remarks to commemorate the official handover of the books.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ghana Federation for Disability Organizations (GFD) officially launched their “Expanding Participation for Persons with Disabilities” activity on April 21. At the launch, the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson; Executive Secretary of the National Council on Persons with Disabilities, Kwamena Dadsie Dennis; GFD President, Yaw Ofori Debra and others expressed their commitment to partnering to increase the rights of people with disabilities in Ghana.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Ghana Mission Director Andrew Karas traveled to the Northern Region of Ghana from March 2 to March 6, 2016. During the trip, he attended the 20th International Trade Fair; spoke at a business seminar held by SADA and the USAID Financing Ghanaian Agriculture Project; visited USAID and Peace Corps project sites; and met with USAID partners, Northern Regional Minister Hon. Abdullah Abubakari, and President John Dramani Mahama.

Africa Regional Peer-Learning Workshop on Country Approaches to Risk-Pooling for Attaining Universal Health Coverage

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Ghana Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Authority, and the World Health Organization, organized a five-day workshop focused on the goal of achieving universal healthcare in Africa. The workshop launched on Monday, February 15, 2016, at the Mövenpick Hotel in Accra, Ghana, and will run through Friday, February 19. It brings together more than 150 representatives from the government, civil society, and the private sector of countries including Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo and Uganda.

The Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP), a food security program that seeks to rebuild Ghana’s small pelagic marine fish stocks, officially launches on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Akroma Plaza in Takoradi, Western Region, Ghana. Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), SFMP is a Feed the Future project, a Presidential initiative focused on transforming the agriculture sector.
