AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY

Agriculture represents 85 percent of export earnings and almost 75 percent of national employment. Through Feed the Future, USAID focuses on three value chains—maize, coffee and beans—due to their market stability, nutritional benefits and income potential for farming households. We help to expand trade and make Ugandan products more competitive in national, regional and international markets.

DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND GOVERNANCE

We are committed to supporting free and fair elections, strengthening national and local governments as well as civil society, encouraging open public debate and building the capacity of institutions and systems to combat corruption. Our programs help local governments carry out community initiatives by fostering participatory development planning and improving the operations of multiparty local councils.

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND TRADE

Building Uganda's capability to mitigate the environmental impacts of oil exploration and production is a priority. Our ecotourism programs provide local communities opportunities to develop tourism businesses and services that will enhance communities’ connection to Uganda’s natural resources, which will reduce threats to biodiversity and protect the country’s diverse landscapes.

EDUCATION

USAID improves the quality of basic education and strengthens the teaching workforce with a particular focus on girls, the vulnerable and children in conflict-affected regions. We also support evidence-based curriculum reform and policy development, which are critical to the quality of education systems.

ENVIRONMENT AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

Working closely with our Ugandan partners and the private sector, USAID helps to reduce the potential threats of oil and illegal resource extraction to biodiversity conservation. As a result of our work, Uganda has realized improvements to its wetlands, watersheds, forests and national parks.

GLOBAL HEALTH

USAID trains health and community outreach workers to help prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Our program also strengthens Uganda’s decentralized health system, improves the quality of and access to family planning and maternal and newborn health services and supports the large-scale delivery of preventive services such as childhood immunizations and nutritional assistance.

WORKING IN CRISIS AND CONFLICT

Our conflict mitigation and reconciliation program has made significant contributions to the return of peace and development to Northern Uganda, which was profoundly affected by the 23-year Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency. USAID directly addresses conflict in the northeast region of Karamoja.
