Dushanbe, Tajikistan – U.S. Chargѐ d’Affaires Kevin Covert joined Deputy Minister of Education and Science Latofat Naziri, local education officials and stakeholders, implementing partners, students, librarians, and teachers to celebrate the shared accomplishments of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Quality Reading Project partnership as it closes after four years.

Through USAID, the U.S. government partnered with the Ministry of Education and Science, the Republican Teacher Training Institute, the Republican Methodological Center, the Academy of Education, and the National Testing Center to improve reading instruction in Tajik and Russian language primary grade classes, reaching over 435,000 primary grade students.

U.S. Government Delivers Small Medical Equipment for Rural Clinics in Khatlon, Tajikistan

U.S. Ambassador Susan M. Elliott presented medical equipment for the people of Khatlon region to Head of the Department of organization of health services for mothers and children, and family planning of Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population Dr. Sherali Rahmatulloev.  Representatives of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Mercy Corps International participated in the ceremony along with representatives of Khatlon regional and district governments and district health center personnel.

U. S. Government Delivers Water to Homes in Vahdat District

 U.S. Ambassador Susan M. Elliott and Chorsu Jamoat Chairman Emom Siddikov officially handed over a new drinking water system to the residents of Ghalchagi village in Chorsu, Vahdat District. Vahdat District Chairman Amirzoda Rahmonali (TBC), USAID representatives, jamoat officials, Mahalla Committee leaders, and residents of Ghalchagi village also participated in the ceremony. The system will provide 353 residents with clean drinking water. The water infrastructure project is part of the USAID Local Governance Project, which works in 10 districts and 20 jamoats to improve the quality of local governance and service delivery.

U.S. Government Connects Tajikistan and Afghanistan through Vocational Education

The USAID-funded Cross-Border Vocational Education Project, the University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) honored graduates at a graduation ceremony in Khorugh. Shodikhon Jamshed, Governor of Gorno-Badakhshon Autonomous Oblast, His Excellency Abdulagafur Arezou, Afghan Ambassador to Tajikistan, and respected representatives of the Aga Khan Development Network participated in the ceremony.

Reading for children project fosters young children’s love and enthusiasm for books and enjoyable reading

Eleven-year-old Maftuna and her six-year-old brother Shukrullo live in the remote village of Dustov, in Khatlon province, Tajikistan. Like most children in Dustov, Maftuna and Shukrullo had no access to books for young children, not even at the school library, until the arrival of 433 books created and distributed by Reading for Children, a literacy project funded by USAID and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation.

USAID Supports Regional Migrants Forum

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported a Regional Migrants Forum to discuss tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment among migrants in Central Asia. Tajik Government and non-governmental partners cooperated to conduct the event, which was funded by USAID through the USAID Dialogue on HIV and TB project. Approximately 40 representatives from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan working in the field of TB prevention and control participated in the forum.
