U.S. Ambassador Michele J. Sison declared open a U.S. Government funded $97,925 (12 million rupees) renovated children's park for residents of Karachchi, Kilinochchi on May 4 alongside the Honorable Child Development and Women's Empowerment Minister, Tissa Karaliyadda.
April 30, 2013: United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele J. Sison opened a public market and a bus station in Pullumalai, Batticaloa on Monday April 29, helping enhance transportation and livelihood opportunities of local communities in the Eastern Province.
A United States Government grant of $500,000 will help 150,000 residents in the Northern and Eastern Provinces avoid landmines and explosive remnants of war. Beginning this week in Mullaitivu, resettling communities are participating in mine risk education activities funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement. Implemented by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), the mine risk education falls under a program that supports safe resettlement and restores livelihoods.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele Sison handed over wheelchairs to children at the prosthetic and orthotic center of the National Children's Hospital in Colombo, marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3. The center is part of a $2 million program funded by USAID, the U.S. Government's development arm, to improve access to quality physical rehabilitation services for some 8,640 disabled and injured children, women and men across the country.
On October 26, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Michele Sison, opened the “Sea the Differences” Training and Production Center in Selvanayagapuram, Trincomalee. The Center’s inauguration was attended by Eastern Province Chief Minister M. Najeeb Abdul Majeed and Chief Secretary D.M.S. Abaygunawardana. The Center will empower people with disabilities, providing training and income generation opportunities. This initiative is a partnership between the U.S. Government’s development arm - the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), an Eastern-based foundation - Arumbugal Foundation, and the Department of Social Services - Eastern Province. USAID supports the Center under its VEGA/ BIZ+ program which provides grants along with technical and managerial assistance to small-and medium-size businesses.
