Solarcentury in South Africa has built two solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) head office in Pretoria. Solar panels have been installed on the existing building as well as on specially built carports, creating the largest parking structure solar canopy in South Africa. So in addition to shading vehicles, the carports will generate clean electricity.

The U.S. Embassy joins the South African government and other civil society leaders in condemning the violence against foreigners taking place in KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of South Africa. We remain concerned at the loss of innocent lives, destruction of property, and impact on families and communities, and we urge individuals involved to refrain from all forms of violence, exercise restraint, and rely on peaceful dialog to resolve any differences

As we have already heard this morning, South Africa is burdened by one of the most severe TB epidemics in the world. Additionally, South Africa has the greatest burden of HIV-infected individuals - and the TB and HIV epidemics are fueling each other.

USAID/Southern Africa’s Mission Director, Cheryl L. Anderson, celebrated World Water Week by visiting Groot Marico in North West Province with USAID partner, the Marico River Conservation Association (MRCA).

Ms. Anderson remarked that clean rivers and access to high quality water is very important to all of us and that USAID partners with communities throughout Southern Africa to encourage sustainable and fair management of land, water, fisheries and other resources.
