A new public-private partnership between Bayer HealthCare and the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) will make the oral contraceptive Microgynon Fe available in local pharmacies at low prices, providing couples in Senegal high quality and affordable family planning option.

The partnership gives accessible family planning to women through the private sector and helps meet the growing demand for contraceptives and the total sustainability of supply. Modern family planning reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancies and improves the health of mothers and their children by allowing the spacing of pregnancies.

For decades, USAID has supported family planning programs in Senegal based on the principle of informed choice to ensure women and families have enough information and access to a wide range of products and contraceptive methods. USAID has worked with the Ministry of Health and Social Action in support of the government’s priority.

To this end, the partnership helps ensure equitable access to family planning services to all communities in Senegal and availability of different contraceptive methods in all public health facilities.  At a February 25 product launch, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Sandra Clark emphasized the important role of public-private partnerships in helping States to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We are pleased that this important initiative between USAID and Bayer HealthCare now extends to Senegal,” Ms. Clark said. “The private sector has an important role to play in contributing to sustainable development by ensuring women in Senegal have regular access to quality contraceptives at affordable prices.”

Women who want to have more information about contraceptives should contact their nearest health care professional.
