U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Jerry Bisson joined President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain today for the inauguration ceremony of the USAID-funded $1.5 million Faculty of Education building at the Karakoram International University (KIU).  KIU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil Ahmed was also present at the event.

The newly constructed building is one of the 17 Faculties of Education buildings that USAID has constructed or rehabilitated in order to train Pakistan’s next generation of teachers and education professionals.  These facilities will serve over 6,500 students and over 500 faculty members each year.

President Hussain acknowledged USAID’s role in promoting access to high-quality education in the province and throughout Pakistan through infrastructure support.  He also recognized the significance of having a modern Faculty of Education and the need to prepare well-trained educators in Pakistan.

Marking a milestone in U.S. support of Pakistan’s energy sector, Nancy Estes, Acting Mission Director for United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Yousaf Awan, Chief Executive Officer of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), inaugurated the Power Distribution Control Center (PDCC) at IESCO today.

The United States government is helping to save the lives of thousands of linemen who work for Pakistan's electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) through a safety training program. The most recent batch of graduate trainees was presented with certificates of completion at a ceremony in Islamabad today. The trainings are conducted under a project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The United States has showcased its long-standing support for Pakistan's agriculture sector with a pavilion at the Dawn Sarsabz Agri Expo. The U.S. pavilion highlights initiatives that are helping modernize the agriculture sector, improve value chains and market access, increase yields and income for farmers, and ensure the sector's sustainability. The two-day exhibition in Lahore, inaugurated today, is open to the public.

Today the United States and Pakistan signed a $72 million project implementation agreement to refurbish and upgrade the Mangla dam located in the Mirpur district of Azad Kashmir.  The rehabilitation will improve the operating capacity of the hydroelectric plant at Mangala dam by 90 megawatts (MW), enough electricity for about 200,000 Pakistani households.  A total amount of $150 million is slated for the project, with $72 million allotted for this initial phase.
 
Pakistan Reading Project

The United States and Pakistan launched the Pakistan Reading Project today, marking the beginning of a five year, $160 million investment in reading education in Pakistan. Funded through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the project will improve the reading skills of 3.2 million children across Pakistan, build the capacity of 94,000 primary school teachers, and provide over 6,000 scholarships to train aspiring teachers.

Pakistan’s Pioneering Mobile Agriculture Project

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), launched a new pilot project to introduce mobile enabled advisory and financial services for peach and potato farmers and fishermen in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As a result of this project, over 1,700 small and medium sized farms and 15,000 people in Swat will gain access to mobile banking. With information and financing more readily available, farmers can learn practices to increase their crop yields, gain increased access to markets, and conduct efficient and safe financial transactions.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Entrepreneurs Project, has trained 24,000 small business owners in the field of medicinal plants and honey.  The Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Honey Industry conference on February 3 featured discussions aimed at developing the medicinal plant and honey sector in Pakistan.  Plant collectors and bee-keepers discussed business opportunities with buyers and service providers.

Ambassador Richard Olson attended the release of Pakistan's National Institute for Population Studies Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) for 2012-13 at a ceremony at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad. State Minister for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar was also present at the event.
