U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Jerry Bisson joined President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain today for the inauguration ceremony of the USAID-funded $1.5 million Faculty of Education building at the Karakoram International University (KIU).  KIU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil Ahmed was also present at the event.

The newly constructed building is one of the 17 Faculties of Education buildings that USAID has constructed or rehabilitated in order to train Pakistan’s next generation of teachers and education professionals.  These facilities will serve over 6,500 students and over 500 faculty members each year.

President Hussain acknowledged USAID’s role in promoting access to high-quality education in the province and throughout Pakistan through infrastructure support.  He also recognized the significance of having a modern Faculty of Education and the need to prepare well-trained educators in Pakistan.

The United States government will launch a second phase of its Merit and Needs Based Program which will benefit 3,000 deserving but financially constrained Pakistani students. This was shared by Gregory Gottlieb, Mission Director, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Pakistan in a meeting with 29 vice chancellors of partner universities and Professor Mukhtar Ahmad, Executive Director, Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan.

The United States handed over a newly completed hospital to the AJK Government today. The Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Dhirkot was inaugurated today by USAID Pakistan Mission Director Gregory Gottlieb, Sardar Qamar Zaman, Minister of Health, Government of AJK, and Representatives from the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA)/ State Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (SERRA) .

U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson led a high-level U.S. delegation participating in Expo Pakistan 2013, held from September 26-29 at the Karachi Expo Centre.  Ambassador Olson was joined by U.S. Consul General in Karachi Michael Dodman, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Gregory Gottlieb, Senior Commercial Officer David McNeil, and Agricultural Counselor Clay Hamilton as they toured the Expo hall and visited the United States Pavilion on Friday.

U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson visited the Jamshoro Thermal Power Station (JTPS), which was recently upgraded with $19.3 million in U.S. assistance. The Jamshoro plant will now provide an additional 270 megawatts of power to the national grid, enough to provide electricity to nearly 4.3 million more Pakistanis. U.S. Ambassador Richard Olson joined Federal Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif and WAPDA Chairman Syed Raghib Shah to laud the completion of the Gomal Zam dam project. The dam will boost the region's electricity supply, irrigate farmlands, and protect the South Waziristan area from seasonal flooding.

The United States announces the launch of the Pakistan Reading Project to boost the reading skills of 3.2 million Pakistani children. This project will fund improvements in reading instruction and reading assessment in grades one through five throughout the Pakistani public school system. The International Rescue Committee (IRC), which is partnering with regional governments and Pakistani civil society organizations, will implement this $160 million project in an estimated 38,000 public schools over the next five years.

Today, U.S. Ambassador Richard Olson and Commerce Secretary Qasim Niaz joined business owners and stakeholders to celebrate the unprecedented success of Pakistan’s mango sector.  The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has helped boost mango production and exports to international markets, leading to a 75 percent increase in farm revenues and the creation of hundreds of new jobs across Pakistan.
