Creating a Healthier Ethiopia: Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems
The pharmacy at Bishoftu Hospital has shown great improvements after the introduction of the Drug and Therapeutic Committee, supported by the USAID-funded Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services. The Head of the Pharmacy Unit at the hospital says, through the Drug and Therapeutic Committee, the pharmacy ensures patients are provided with the best, most cost-effective care possible by addressing issues such as availability and rational use of medicines.

Through capacity building efforts of the USAID-funded Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services, the pharmacy practice in Ethiopia is shifting from being commodity-centered to patient-centered. This has empowered the pharmacists to be active members of the health care team and contribute to better health outcomes.

Kassa Mulualem plow her father's land. Kassa is a project participant and role model. She was one of the first women in her area to take up plowing, an activity that is traditionally reserved for men. By sharing her experience with the village economic and social associations in her area, she is helping to raise awareness about gender equality and encouraging other USAID beneficiaries to change their lives by changing their understanding of the division of labor between men and women.
