PROTECTING THE AMAZON FORESTS IN UCAYALI, PERU

The US ambassador in Peru, Brian A. Nichols, launched on November 6th the Social Capital and Community Forest Management Project in Pucallpa. The project aims to improve the conditions of indigenous population of Ucayali in community forest management, in order to conserve their natural resources and biodiversity.

The project focuses on organizational strengthening for AIDER, the Research and Integrated Development Association. It will work with five native communities and six villages to strengthen their social capital, and promote sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and mitigation of deforestation and land degradation.  Furthermore, the project will provide training on conflict resolution and forest surveillance systems to help mitigate conflicts resulting from land invasions and illegal logging.
